A family caregiver is anyone who cares for a family member or friend who has a chronic illness or disability (caree).

Why a Virtual Caregiving Town Hall meeting?

Having a community to connect with and lean on is important. Although caregiving can be a rewarding experience, it also tends to be an isolating experience.

Organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association foster support groups for caregivers, individuals living with Alzheimer’s and others dealing with the disease. But many caregivers have not discovered a supporting circle of care for themselves and their carees.

The Virtual Caregiving Town Hall Meeting for Douglas and Sarpy Counties is intended to help participants:

  • Connect with other family caregivers in your community
  • Discover caregiving resources in Douglas and Sarpy counties
  • Discuss your personal caregiving experience and what it is like to access these resources
  • Identify ways you might want to participate in a caregiving community

A Town Hall is a Facilitated Conversation, not a Presentation

The Caregiving Town Hall Meeting is all about fostering a conversation among family caregivers. The host and facilitator will introduce themselves, but the hour will consist of a structured chat discussion based on questions like these:
- Which resources do you currently use?
- Which resources do you need but cannot find?
- What gets in the way of receiving the resources and help you need?
- What’s been most helpful to you as you help and care for your family member(s)?
- What are your top challenges right now as you do your best to help your family member(s)?
- What helps you cope with the impact of your personal caregiving experience?
- What is the best decision or action you’ve taken so far?

Our experts will follow up with anyone who needed a resource or suggestion that we couldn’t address. They will also organize the chat discussion and survey responses into a document to send to local, state and federal representatives to inform their planning and policies.

The Caregiver Town Hall is being hosted by Ken Clipperton, a local caregiver advocate, and facilitated by Denise Brown, a nationally known author and advocate for family caregivers since 1996.

Do I have to be a techie to participate?

You do not have to be a techie or have a video camera to participate. You do need Internet access and a browser such as Chrome. The event is chat-based.

It will be hosted in the Caring Advocacy & Awareness Volunteers chat system that provides an easy and convenient way for you to participate in the conversation.

What will happen to the information shared at the town hall?

The organizers of the town hall are active locally and nationally in supporting, educating, and advocating for family caregivers. They plan to share your insights and experiences (anonymously) with agencies and policy makers in your local community, county, state and even at the federal level. The insights they gain will also be used to shape their activities on your behalf and the services they offer to caregivers.
